The UCLA Bruins (0-0) and the Rice Owls (0-0) will meet up for the first time since 2006 in the season opening game for both teams. This clash will be played out on Thursday, August 30th, and it will be Rice as the home team. The Bruins won that 2006 clash 26-16 as a 27.5-point home favorite, and UCLA also bested the Owls 63-21 as a 26-point home favorite in 2005.

UCLA did not have a very successful season last year and ended up losing 4 of their final 5 games of the year, including an embarrassing 0-50 defeat against the USC Trojans. The Bruins had an inconsistent offense that has plenty of problems to work through in 2012, while their defense gave up 45 or more points in 4 of their final 10 games of the season.

The Owls lost 34-73 against the Houston Cougars toward the end of the year and they also had offensive issues of their own while scoring 20 or less in 4 of their final 7. Savvy bettors who bet on Rice games going under the total would have been winners in 6 of the Owls’ final 8 games of the year.
Las Vegas opened up the Bruins as a 14-point betting favorite, but it didn’t take long for college football bettors to adjust the point spread. Currently the online sportsbooks have UCLA favored by 15.5, although those wanting to back Rice can find a line of +16 if they do enough searching. The Bruins have covered the point spread in just 2 of their last 10 road games.
