Although this matchup would likely be a blowout in the NFL’s regular season, the preseason matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco 49ers could be close. San Francisco opened up as a 4-point betting favorite with a total of 33 but now they are only favored by 3 and the total has been adjusted to 34. The 49ers are attracting close to 70% of the action here, but the preseason tends to produce upsets and close games that most would never expect if we were in the regular season.

Minnesota and San Francisco last met up back in 2009 in a memorable game that saw Vikings quarterback Brett Favre throw a long, last second touchdown pass to win 27-24 at home as a 7-point favorite. The Vikings have won 3 of their 4 head-to-head meetings against the 49ers since 2003, while the total had gone under in 3 straight before Favre’s touchdown pass helped the most recent matchup go over the total.
The Vikings could compete here since there is a bit of a quarterback competition for the top spot. Minnesota wants 1st round draft pick Christian Ponder to assume the responsibilities of starter, but he’ll be pushed by Sage Rosenfels, Joe Webb, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson. The 49ers have starter Alex Smith back for another year but we’ll see plenty of backup quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick, Josh Johnson, and Scott Tolzien on Friday night.
One thing to consider before placing your bets in this 9:00 PM ET matchup is how the opposing head coaches have fared in the NFL Preseason previously. San Francisco’s Jim Harbaugh is just 2-2 lifetime and he’s lost his only week 1 game as the main man for the 49ers, while Minnesota’s Leslie Frazier is also at 0-1 in week 1 and 2-2 for his preseason career.
