The New York Yankees (98-70) not only lost game 1 in extra innings to the Detroit Tigers (92-76), they also lost shortstop and longtime captain Derek Jeter for the remainder of the playoffs with a broken ankle. Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez each hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the then-scoreless Yankees hope, but Delmon Young of the Tigers ended their hope in extra innings as Detroit won 6-4 in game 1 of the ALCS.

We’ll have a pair of right-handed starting pitchers on the mound for game 2 of the ALCS on Sunday as Anibal Sanchez (4-7, 1.27 WHIP, 3.67 ERA) of the Tigers faces off against Hiroki Kuroda (16-11, 1.15 WHIP, 3.28 ERA) for New York. The game will be shown on TBS at 4:00 PM ET and betting odds currently show the home-team Yankees are favored to win at -145, while the total sits at 8 runs.
Sanchez has been stellar recently and has allowed 2 or less earned runs in 7 of his last 9 starts. He’s only squared off against the Yankees twice in his career with one start coming back in 2006 when the rosters were largely different. The right-hander pitched against New York earlier this year and gave up 7 earned runs off 7 hits and 2 walks over just 3.0 innings pitched as his team lost 8-12.
Kuroda has been very inconsistent recently after being dominant in the middle parts of the season and the former Dodger has given up 4 earned runs in 4 of his last 8 starts. He’s pitched against the Tigers twice this year and has given up 5 earned runs off 17 hits and 1 walk over 13.1 innings pitched.
