The Browns and the Lions will get started at 7:30 PM ET on August 10th, and currently the home-team Lions are a 3-point betting favorite with a total of 36. Although the total hasn’t shifted since being released, the point spread has seen a good share of movement since opening up at Detroit -4.5.

The odds might have moved in favor of the Browns, but it’s interesting to note that NFL bet-tracking websites show that Detroit is getting close to 75% of the action on the point spread. Cleveland has been in the news quite a bit lately over their quarterback situation. Incumbent Colt McCoy has been leading the team for a few years and was at least expecting a competition after the Browns drafted 28-year-old Brandon Weeden in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. It took only a few days before Weeden was named the starter, and McCoy has been understandably confused by the decision. Coming in after the top 2 quarterbacks leave the game for the Browns will be Seneca Wallace and Thaddeus Lewis.
Detroit has an established quarterback in Matthew Stafford, and there won’t be any rumblings for a potential competition when veteran Shaun Hill takes over. The Lions also can turn to Boise State’s Kellen Moore and William & Mary’s R.J. Archer in the 2nd half, but it’s doubtful that either of those guys gets much in the way of opportunity this year.
Detroit coach Jim Schwartz is one of the few in the NFL that tries to win preseason games and he’s 10-2 as a starter, while Cleveland’s Pat Shurmur has guided his team to a 1-3 mark over 1 season. Shurmer is undefeated at 1-0 in week 1, while Schwartz is 2-1 during the first week of the preseason and generally doesn’t push his team as hard as possible until the last 2 weeks.
