None of the 4 games in this current series have gone over their respective totals, and the line of 4.5 tonight will be the lowest so far between these teams in the playoffs this year.

New York’s defense during their playoff run has been tremendous, but it is worth noting that the 1.90 goals per game they have allowed over their last 10 contests is only moderately better than the 2.20 allowed on average by New Jersey during that span. The Rangers are only scoring 2.10 goals a game over their last 10, so that defensive edge is hugely important for their success. New Jersey is averaging 2.80 goals scored per game but had mounted only marginal offense against the Rangers before managing to put up 4 goals in Game 4.

Close to 70% of tracked NHL bettors are going with New York to take the series lead back tonight, but the betting odds don’t seem to be moving in any one direction from what I’ve seen so far. The Rangers are 33-15-1-2 at home this year while the Devils have a road mark of 29-18-3-0.

The left-hander has been dominant against the Rays lately and has given up a total of just 11 earned runs in his 6 starts against the team since 2011.

Shields has also struggled a bit lately and has now given up 8 earned runs over his last 2 starts. He’s been too hittable lately and has given up quite a few home runs. That being said, he’s given up just 2 earned runs over 3 starts against Toronto since 2011 and Tampa Bay has won all 3 attempts.
