It’s not an easy game to pick a bet on, but some are finding a reason to bet on Friday’s NFL Preseason matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs anyway. There is very little we can learn by studying the past habits of the two coaches here, and that makes it even harder to handicap. Arizona’s Ken Whisenhunt has a 7-13 record in the NFL Preseason, and he’s gone 2-3 in week 1. Kansas City’s Romeo Crennel has gone just 2-2 in week 1 of the NFL Preseason and is only slightly better at 8-8 for his career.

It never hurts to have a quarterback battle on your hands in the preseason since that means that the team will be unlikely to play a vanilla offense. Arizona has that here with Kevin Kolb and John Skelton competing for the starting spot, and Richard Bartel and Ryan Lindley spelling them in the later quarters. Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel needs to prove he is capable of being an NFL starter, but he doesn’t have much in the way of competition with backups like Brady Quinn, Ricky Stanzi, and Alex Tanney on the roster.
The Chiefs opened up as 3-point favorites here but have been bet down to -2.5 at most online sportsbooks despite NFL bet-tracking websites showing that Kansas City is garnering roughly 60% of the action on the point spread. The total has gone down from 34.5 to 34 at certain sportsbooks, but both numbers are widely available.
Kansas City and Arizona have met up 3 times since 2002 and it’s been the Chiefs winning every time. They won 49-0 as 9.5-point favorites in 2002, 23-20 as 3.5-point favorites in 2006, and 31-13 as 9-point favorites most recently in 2010.
