Sunday’s NBA game between the Atlanta Hawks (14-6) and the New Orleans Hornets (4-15) might not appear to be a competitive clash on paper, but the Las Vegas betting odds seem to indicate that a potential upset could be brewing.
The Hawks started off as 4-point betting favorites but have already been bet as low as -2.5 despite NBA wager-tracking websites showing that the Hornets are only getting about 20% of the action here.
The total has also moved around and is at 174.5 after debuting at 176.5.
Perhaps part of the reason why the Hornets are not double digit underdogs like some expected has to do with the fact they’ve won outright in their last 3 matchups against the Hawks.
New Orleans won 100-59 as 3.5-point road underdogs most recently last year, and they took home 93-86 and 96-88 wins the last two times they hosted Atlanta.
The Hawks haven’t won in New Orleans since 2008 when they took an 87-79 final as 8.5-point underdogs.

The Hawks are in the 4th straight road of their current trip, and they’ve won 2 of 3 heading into Sunday’s clash with the Hornets.
Atlanta has won 7 of their last 9 games this season but they’ve only covered the spread in 4 of 10 while going over in 3 of the 4 most recent games played.
The Hawks have guard Jeff Teague (ankle) listed as probable, while forward Al Horford (shoulder) will be out until late April.
New Orleans has now covered the odds in 5 straight games despite only winning in one.
That victory was an impressive 93-67 home win over the Magic as 3.5-point underdogs, so the Hornets may have just turned the corner on what started off as a lost season.
