The San Diego Chargers (7-7) are trying to hold onto their slim playoff hopes in Saturday’s game against the Detroit Lions (9-5), and they almost surely will need a win here if they want a chance at the NFL’s postseason.
Unfortunately for the Chargers is the fact they are 2-4 away from San Diego this year and will be the road team against Detroit.
The Chargers would be the 9th place team in the AFC if the playoffs were to start today, but they do have a chance to get back into the top 8 that will advance.
The Denver Broncos lead the AFC West standings with an 8-6 record, making it possible for San Diego to get a top 4 spot in the playoffs if Tim Tebow and company falter.
The Tennessee Titans are also 7-7 but are in the 8th place in the playoff standings because they have a better win percentage in common games.
Detroit is considered a 1.5-point favorite with the total being bet up to 52 after debuting at 50.5 earlier in the week.
Close to 60% of tracked NFL bettors are taking the visiting Chargers here, and much has to do with how well they’ve been playing recently.
San Diego lost 6 straight games earlier in the year but has since reeled off 3 consecutive victories after pulling the 34-14 upset over the Baltimore Ravens last weekend.
San Diego has covered the point spread in all 3 games, with 2 of them going over the total.
The Lions are also bouncing back after a rough mid-season stretch saw them lose outright in 5 of 7 games.
They enter Saturday’s 4:05 PM ET game with a win streak of 2, but they have covered the point spread just twice over their last 9 games while going over in 2 straight.
